I've been a painter for a long time!

I've worked as an artist since 1986.  I began teaching 12 years ago and during the coronavirus I also began teaching online.  The one thing I know about painters and painting is that no two people are alike and people respond differently to a variety of instruction.   I want to make my teaching available for you at your leisure.  You can attend a live workshop when they are available, or you can also take my courses when you are ready, on your own time and at your own pace.  The instructional videos don't expire so you can have access to them when you need.

Credentials

I graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in studio art.  Something you may not know about me is that I also attended school for counseling and adventure and worked with adolescents and college students.  All the while, I painted and showed my work in galleries.  It was a good combination of work.

Workshops

My online courses and downloads will take you through materials for oil paint, arranging flowers for painting, back to basics instruction for composition, understanding values, and learning how to make your brushstroke more expressive and energetic.  We will paint flowers, still life, landscape and interiors. I have a lot to teach and you will see my curriculum expand over time.

Frequently asked questions

How did you start teaching?

Through the years I was frequently asked to teach workshops, but never felt like I had the time.  There came a point when I knew my art profession needed to come first, so I stepped back from my other work, first part time and then entirely.  During that transitional period, I responded "yes" to teaching workshops and began teaching regularly.  Over time, it increased as people wanted to work with me.  During the pandemic, everything transitioned to remote work almost overnight.  Much like the career transition, I had been asked to teach online for years, but resisted.  But once I took the plunge, I loved it.  I love reaching people all over the world and knowing that no one has to travel in order to work with me!

What kind of training did you need?

I went to my state university and ended up in the art department, which happened to be a fantastic place to learn and get an education.

In terms of learning to teach, I spent a lot of years in education, working with individuals and groups, teaching ways to modify behavior and help people attain positive growth.  It was a natural extension to combine both experiences into teaching oil painting workshops.
